How did you get here? Describe your career history and background that led you to your role at HorizonOne.
I’m from Bathurst NSW, where I studied a Bachelor of Communications at Charles Sturt University before moving to Sydney to work for Commercial Radio Australia for 2 years. Having missed my gap year, I decided to stretch my wings and go travelling which led to me taking up a position as a Travel Director with Contiki. I have now travelled to 55 countries over the last 5 years.
My favourite thing about Contiki was the pinch me moments. My job was to literally take people to the most coveted travel destinations in the world. Every day you wake up somewhere different. I loved sharing my knowledge and educating people on the history of these places, there’s nothing else like it.
The hardest part was having to live out of a suitcase for 6 months every year, and not having any real place to call home. I met my girlfriend while travelling and decided it was time to move back to Australia. She’s from Canberra, and some of my family lives here too, so it was an easy decision in the end.
When I was job hunting, I reached out to many different recruitment companies and applied for roles on the APS gazette. HorizonOne was the only recruitment company that took the time to explain the realities of the jobs market in Canberra, especially around working in the APS. Even when there was no good news, I wasn’t ghosted like I was with other recruitment agencies. Because HorizonOne treated me like a person and not like a number, I jumped at the chance to be part of the team. The Braddon location definitely helped with the decision making!
What does your role involve?
At the moment, I’m determined to learn as much as I can and focus on my industry sector. I’m working on developing the communications and marketing recruitment area of the business and have set a goal to be the go to person for these roles. My focus at the moment is establishing a diverse talent pool of candidates, getting to know them better so I can proactively approach clients with access to talented people. The whole HorizonOne team deserves a big hand for their support in this process, they are always ready to help me out whenever I need it.
Ultimately, my role is about making connections with people. Building relationships, establishing trust and following through on promises is a big part of my approach. I’ve learned over time you can find out a lot about someone by chatting to them about their favourite footy team and the things they are passionate about Building a connection on a personal level helps people to feel more comfortable talking about their motivations, ambitions and what they’re looking for in a career. This enables me to place a candidate in a position that is best for their skills, values and is a great culture fit.
What would you say is different about HorizonOne’s approach to recruitment?
I’m fairly new to the recruitment industry, but my experience as a candidate was polarising. HorizonOne were willing to put in the face to face engagement. I was kept updated, and they spent time building a relationship. I felt like I was valued when they invested the time into having conversations.
I had some very mediocre experiences with other recruiters. All the worst industry reputation elements happened: I was ghosted, I had to chase them, they were unwilling to have honest conversations, and they didn’t keep me informed.
It really comes down to candidate care. Keeping in contact, checking in, working on building relationships, these are all important. It’s not about quick wins, it’s about cultivating long term relationships. These are all the things that make HorizonOne a successful business, and what makes a candidate’s experience positive.
What do you like best about your role?
My favourite thing is talking to people and hearing their stories. Everyone has a story with a different experience, and no two people are the same. Everyone has something to offer, and there’s only so much information a piece of paper can extract.
To me, candidates aren’t just a CV with a database reference number, and clients aren’t just a source of income. My role is about more than that because there are things that people can offer and add to a workplace culture that could be a better fit than just technical abilities. Clients often need a real person supporting them, and not just a desk robot. So I’m just really enjoying building connections.
Outside of work I love to…
I love getting outdoors and being active. Canberra is perfect for that, there are so many walking trails and places to explore. Otherwise, I’m indoors cooking up a storm in the kitchen for my family and friends.

Who is the biggest stirrer in the office?
I like to think that the biggest stirrer is the person who pokes the bear and then ducks for cover. In this situation, the bear is Simon and David, and I know Sarah T and Sarah F love to get out that big old poking stick.
