How did you get here? Describe your career history and background that led you to your role at HorizonOne.
After studying a double degree in Business Studies and International Studies at the University of Technology in Sydney, which I loved, I entered the 2-year Graduate Program with Coles. This position gave me the chance to hone my management skills while managing teams of between 5 and 100.
I was offered the opportunity to manage one of their new stores which involved recruiting 100 new staff to join the team, it was then that I fell in love with recruitment. Working with the Coles HR team I got to see the recruitment process end to end, and I discovered it was something I really enjoyed.
So when my partner was offered the chance to move to Canberra for work it was an opportunity to consider if I wanted to continue the Graduate Program, or if a career in recruitment might be more for me, which is how I came across the position with HorizonOne. And the rest is history!
What does your role involve?
I’m currently recruiting for positions in the Government Policy and Projects area, I’ve been working closely with Senior Manager Recruitment, Andy Batstone, who has been quickly getting me up to speed. My first role was advertising for an Epidemiologist, it’s been really interesting learning more about the different roles in this sector!
On a day to day basis, my role involves speaking to clients about what kind of person they need for their team, creating an advertisement for that role, reviewing applicants and interviewing potential candidates. I’m looking forward to meeting more of our clients soon as well.
What would you say is different about HorizonOne’s approach to recruitment?
The big difference I’ve noticed is the extra detail HorizonOne goes into for each job search. From our job advertisements being more focused on the candidate and what the role can offer them, to our consultants meeting individual candidates face to face and getting a more in-depth understanding of their needs and motivations. HorizonOne is far less of a ‘click and flick’ recruiter, which I think some of the other recruitment companies I’ve dealt with can be.
We’re also a smaller team, which is great because we work in a real close-knit unit, where communicating and sharing knowledge is easy and encouraged.
What do you like best about your role?
At the moment the best part of my role is meeting new candidates, I’m really enjoying understanding my candidate’s motivations for their next role and being able to match their goals and career desires to suitable roles.
Outside of work I love to…
My partner and I are real nature lovers, we love being outside in the environment, which was a big drawcard for our move to Canberra! We’ve moved to Braddon and being new to Canberra, it’s been great to hop on our bikes and explore the area. The ride around Lake Burley Griffin is beautiful so we’ve done that a few times now! We are also big fans of the snow so we’ll definitely be hitting the slopes this year now we’re closer to the action.
I’ve also joined a netball team here in Canberra, I used to play competitively at a representative level, but now it’s just for fun and to meet new people.
