Describe your career history and qualifications that led to this role.

I’m from Canberra, I’ve always lived here, so I like the idea of working with a local company. My background is in hospitality, working in Canberra’s coffee culture, for a cafe that worked to make a positive impact in our community. They offered free food and coffee to people experiencing homelessness, and dropped off leftovers to shelters. I have a great appreciation for companies that give back to the community.

I moved to the corporate world of recruitment at a multi-national recruitment agency while studying a Bachelor of Communications at the University of Canberra. This was a perfect fit, because I worked in the marketing and communications sector in recruitment so I was able to relate to some of the experiences and industry knowledge that candidates had.

My interest in marketing systems has evolved, so when I joined HorizonOne in August, I began working in the digital and tech space, specifically recruiting into government. It’s a different world recruiting for government clients. It’s certainly an exciting time, especially with the Federal Government pushing into implementing newer and emerging tech.

What would you say is different about HorizonOne’s approach to recruitment?

HorizonOne has such a different perspective on recruitment as a discipline. It’s customer centric and more consultative to the candidate in terms of finding out their needs and what they’re looking for in their next career move. Understanding candidates in such a way means it’s easier having tough conversations with or making better recommendations to clients. It’s about finding the perfect win-win-win.

HorizonOne also offers great career growth opportunities. As a consultant, there’s more investment in career development, which is great to see.

What do you believe are the 3 key elements to being successful in recruitment?

  • A targeted network – As a recruitment consultant, the work really is about using your network to create traction for candidates, and understanding where the work is going to be so you can better serve clients as well
  • Drive to make a difference – Recruitment is a process that’s centred around people. This isn’t just another sales role; a recruitment consultant makes a real impact on people’s situations, which is not to be taken for granted
  • Being proactive – Markets are always changing and the business landscape is always evolving. If you’re proactive with candidates and clients, then you’re going to be successful in what you do

What is the single best thing about working with HorizonOne?

The people.

Everyone has the same mindset, drive and nature about what we’re doing. We’re able to bounce off each other, and leverage ideas and experiences. It creates a great team atmosphere, and it brings me to work every morning.

Who is the biggest stirrer in the office? Got a good example…..?

Lucas is definitely a stirrer. Once he cracks open an energy drink, the one-liners and stirring really start.

Outside of work I love to…..

Get out of the house and be with friends; I’m a pretty social person. I like road trips, with Huskisson and the south coast area being one of my favourite spots. I’m also into motorbikes, and one of my favourite rides is to Melbourne through Bright and the Snowys, and then back up the coast. In winter you’ll usually find me snowboarding at Perisher.
