Fiona Grimmer Marketing & Business Improvements HorizonOne

What career history or qualifications shaped you for your current role?

Most of my corporate working life prior to HorizonOne was in Real Estate working as a Property Manager. To say that helped me grow pretty thick skin is a huge understatement! It was tough going, however I gained many skills which are transferable into my current role. My ability to juggle a large amount of different tasks and priorities as well as getting exposure to such a diverse range of people has put me in good stead to handle pretty much anything the challenges of recruitment can throw at me!

What is different about working at a recruitment company compared to other organisations you have worked for?

Both property management and recruitment are people focused jobs, and you have 2 clients to satisfy with different or even conflicting needs for every job. Both require consistently exceptional service in order to stand out from the crowd. I guess the difference is that the ‘balance of power’ in recruitment is less in favour of the client as it is for property owners in Canberra. This is due to the scarcity of talented people that every employer is chasing. This is the space HorizonOne operates and excels in.

What is the best thing about your job?

I have been given opportunities here to explore different skills and find out what I enjoy doing. It’s a very supportive place to work and I like that I have the chance to move and grow rather than being kept in a box. I have discovered a talent for Marketing and Social Media, and for driving creative solutions for projects focused on continuously improving our service offering.

What would you say is different about HorizonOne’s approach to recruitment and business?

The culture of HorizonOne breeds a special kind of recruitment consultant which is nothing like the typical salesperson that unfortunately springs to mind when thinking about recruitment. They focus on building strong, long term professional relationships based on trust and respect rather than quick transactions. It is great to be part of a company that places such a high value on quality.

What kinds of things are involved in your role?

I started working at HorizonOne as the Team Administrator supporting the team behind the scenes. My role has changed to focus on HorizonOnes marketing, building our online profile, content creation as well as implementing a number of exciting new projects.

Who is the biggest stirrer in the office? Give us a good example?

Not sure about the biggest stirrer however David Harrington’s dry, sarcastic humour is very in much line with mine. Although I often find myself rolling my eyes at his lame dad jokes.

What is something you do outside of work others might be surprised by?

Many moons ago I was a professional ballerina, dancing in London with the English National Ballet. These days I am a little less mobile but I still have a huge passion for Ballet and am an instructor at Xtend Barre Canberra.
