My HorizonOne story

Before joining HorizonOne, I had only a vague idea of what a recruitment agency does. Recruitment is often dismissed as just “matching CVs with jobs,” but it’s far more challenging, rewarding, and varied than I ever expected.
I’ve had the chance to work on some truly unique roles with lasting impacts on people and organisations. Two in particular stand out: one involved helping a wonderful candidate and their family relocate to Norfolk Island, a really unique role overseeing the relationship between Commonwealth government and the local council on Island, and one that made a lasting impact on their career. Another was matching a not-for-profit organisation facing reduced government funding with an experienced leader who secured new financial partnerships, allowing the organisation to thrive through its next growth phase.
One of the things I love most about recruitment is the tangible outcomes that you get to see through to fruition every day. Each process has a natural end and seeing it through gives me a real sense of achievement. The work is measurable too. If I set myself a goal to earn a certain commission per year, I can break down the steps I need to take, from placements to interviews, to reach it.
I started at HorizonOne back in 2019 as a Recruitment Advisor, fresh out of a graduate program. In the first 12 months, I soaked up as much information as I could, learnt from leaders around me who are the best in the business, and developed expertise in my areas of focus. My confidence built over time, and I was super proud to hit my financial targets in my first billing quarter. Since then, I've worked hard to grow my desk through genuine relationships and a strong commitment to getting the best possible results for my clients and candidates.
HorizonOne has provided me with the ability to grow, not
only as a recruitment professional but also as a leader. After receiving
several promotions, I am now a Business Manager and have the pleasure of leading
a small team of Recruitment Consultants. I thoroughly enjoy providing
mentorship and guidance to my team and it gives me a great sense of achievement
to see them grow in an industry that provides so much potential.

I joined H1 with 2 years recruitment experience and my main reason for moving was that I was more aligned with the recruitment style here. My biggest stressor in my old role was that the focus was profit driven with KPI’s being more important than quality recruitment. At H1 I feel respected for my knowledge and craft. There are no master servant relationships with our clients, it’s a partnership not transactional and we are able to focus on what really matters – finding people their next role and client’s great new team members
Moving from blue-collar recruitment to the corporate world was definitely a leap into the unknown and I’m not going to lie, it was a steep learning curve! But instead of a quick training course and being left to sink or swim I am surrounded by my team and leaders who provide daily guidance and support. From day one, my boss Liz took a hands on approach, inviting me into meetings, sharing her expertise and challenging my thinking, which has helped me refine my craft.
Career progression is really important to me, and last year I was promoted to Senior Consultant. One of my proudest moments was receiving the Changing Lives – Personal Growth award, which really affirmed my growth. I appreciate our leaders’ commitment to recognising and championing our progress - it’s a fantastic feeling to know you’re supported and invested in.
Just recently I bought my dream home and land just outside Canberra! My husband, our dogs, and I are finally living on the farm I’ve always dreamed of. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the financial success and flexibility H1 provides - turns out the grass really is greener on the other side!

When I was with a multinational recruitment firm, I initially felt I had a voice and was making meaningful contributions. My manager was in Sydney, but it soon became clear that most decisions came from far above, in a boardroom halfway around the world. The company liked to say, “drive your career,” but the reality was full of boundaries and red tape. I realised that, in truth, I was only implementing changes that were made without my input. Despite my title as a manager, I felt limited in my control and ownership of the direction we were heading.
This lack of autonomy made the work feel repetitive and stunted my growth. I had been in the role for a long time and could navigate it with ease, but there was a sense of stagnation, and I had fallen into cruise control. It was comfortable, yes, but I began to see the cost of staying too long in a place where I wasn’t growing. Eventually, I took the leap and decided to leave, although with a bit of hesitation, wondering if I would find the right fit where I could truly make an impact.
Joining HorizonOne was a breath of fresh air. I knew from the start that I’d have higher accountability here - there’s no flying under the radar. You’re responsible for building your team, running it like a business within a business. The constant learning and challenges push me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. HorizonOne didn’t just offer a role; they involved me in shaping the future of the business. The company’s focus on impact and a supportive work-life balance was crucial to me, especially with my goal of starting a family.
Now, I feel incredibly proud of the journey we’re on and the team I’ve helped build. Watching people’s careers unfold, whether they’re still with us or have moved on to new opportunities, is rewarding. Many of them stay in touch, and we keep tabs on their journeys, knowing we’ve made a lasting impact on their professional and personal lives. At HorizonOne, I’m not just working a job, I’m part of a community that grows together, constantly creating value that’s both tangible and lasting.

When I joined HorizonOne it wasn’t the recruitment industry that drew me in, it was the company itself - the values, the people, and the way they approached their work. A consultant had taken the time to call me and talk through every detail. They treated me as a person, not just another candidate, which left a powerful impression. It was clear that this was a place that genuinely cares, and that’s the kind of company I wanted to be a part of.
I started as the Team Administrator in the corporate team, supporting the business from behind the scenes. Our consultants are experts at what they do, but they rely on a strong, internally focused team to keep things running smoothly. It’s rewarding to know that the corporate team plays such a crucial part in delivering the high-quality service we’re known for.
When I joined over ten years ago, the business was much smaller, and I had the freedom to carve my own path. Now that we’ve grown, that mindset hasn’t changed. We still believe in finding roles that bring out the best in people and playing to each person’s strengths. HorizonOne has encouraged me to grow in ways that align with both my goals and the company’s needs, whether by taking on new roles or adjusting responsibilities to make the most of my skills.
I feel genuinely invested in HorizonOne and they’ve shown they’re invested in me. I’ve built connections, learned from different businesses, and found my own strengths and a career I love. There’s a trust and respect here that allows me to shape my day, maintain work-life balance, and feel part of something meaningful. Even on tough days, I wake up with a purpose, and that purpose has made my life better.
