The Organisation:

Coota Girls is an emerging Non-for-Profit Indigenous Corporation that was founded in 2013, established by a group of former residents of the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls. The Opportunity:

Coota Girls Aboriginal Corporation is seeking a high performing Family and Community Service Coordinator to help the Stolen Generation survivors, and their families link with relevant supports available through the NSW Department of Family and Community Services, depending on their specific needs.

You will have the opportunity to make a real impact within an emerging organisation ensuring a strong voice for Coota Girl’s survivors and descendants for years to come.

This opportunity is through until June 2020 with an option to extend for a further 2 years (funding dependent)

The Role:

This newly created role will work to the Program Manager of Coota Girls.

You will be responsible for:

  • Working with survivors, their families and descendants to identify key areas of need and coordinate referrals to service providers, and coordinate engagement with relevant community members to address key needs. This may include referrals to both Aboriginal and mainstream service providers
  • Supporting the facilitation of referrals, through developing a community network of organisations in the relevant local area, that are supported and informed to be able to work positively with survivors
  • As required, working with local communities and relevant organisations to embed knowledge of the impacts of the Stolen Generations, including support with relevant policies and procedures
  • Coordinating activities relevant to the promotion and awareness raising of Coota Girls and the impacts on Stolen Generation survivors and their families in the local community
  • Coordinate the development of supporting material such as fact sheets and guidance documents to support awareness-raising

The Person:

You pride yourself on strong personal accountability and drive, and you enjoy working autonomously and taking the initiative to deliver results. The idea of making a contribution to healing for the Stolen Generations is very appealing.

You are a skilled communicator with the ability to work collaboratively and sensitively with Stolen Generations members and uphold their self-determination while working in a trauma-informed way.

You will have:

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and experience engaging with, the range of services accessible to Aboriginal families through Family and Community Services.
  • Demonstrated experience in a case management approach to supporting families in accessing government services
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships with the Aboriginal community, build productive relationships with government and liaise with key stakeholder organisations

Mandatory Requirements of the role include:

  • Ability to travel and support the Coota Girls’ activities across the Eastern states.
  • The Family & Community Service Coordinator will need to undertake and satisfactorily complete a Police Check and Working with Children Check.

Suitably qualified and experienced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply for this opportunity.
