EL1 Assistant Director - Health Policy
National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO)
NACCHO is the national peak body representing 144 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). In addition, they are the lead advisor to the Commonwealth Government on primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples nationally.
ACCHSs range from large multi-functional services employing several medical practitioners and providing a wide range of services to small services which rely on Aboriginal health practitioners and/or nurses to provide the bulk of primary health care services. Their 144 members provide services from about 550 clinics.
NACCHO has seen massive growth in the last 12-18 months. This growth is due to a significant increase in their funding and the development of even closer relationships with government, membership organisations and stakeholders.
This role covers a range of duties and activities across the policy and program lifecycle but really affords the person the chance to make a real difference to Indigenous health outcomes.
With cancer being the leading killer of Indigenous people, very few roles will see you being able to have such a direct impact.
This is an opportunity for you to:
- Work on a new program aimed at improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by employing successful strategies for prevention, treatment and ongoing management of Cancer
- Engage with Indigenous communities through partnered consultation
- Provide high level and timely advice and advocacy on highly complex and sensitive matters that contribute to NACCHO’s and stakeholder’s key strategic directions
The primary role of the team is to coordinate the development of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan.
Working as part of this collaborative team, your duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Contribute to a national plan, codesigned through extensive consultation with the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation sector and other key stakeholders
- Articulate a clear path forward for the coordination and delivery across the spectrum of cancer prevention and treatment services in the sector
- Liaise collaboratively with a multitude of stakeholders including; the ACCHO sector and their communities, peak health bodies, researchers, Commonwealth and jurisdiction governments and Aboriginal people with a lived experience of cancer
- Manage and mentor a junior staff member
Travelling to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is an integral part of this role.
The Ideal Person
To be successful in this role, you will be flexible, organised and resilient. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience as a high performing policy or program officer within either the APS or a relevant NGO at the EL1 equivalent level. Strong cultural awareness is paramount to your success in this role and align with organisational values.
You will also have:
- A background in public, social and/or health policy and/or programs
- Effective problem-solving and analytical skills and sound judgement
- A demonstrated collaborative approach to achieving shared goals and ability to lead a small team
- Ability to harness information and opportunities to contribute to NACCHO’s strategic direction
- Outstanding communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to present complex and technical information in a simple and clear manner, and tailor written material to different audiences
- Excellent stakeholder management skills across a range of settings, including identifying and maintaining influential relationships, and an ability to collaborate and influence at senior level.
Salary / Rate
- $110,000 -$120,000 + 15% super
- 12-month non-ongoing contract
- Role is located in the Canberra office with interstate trips
