The Department of the Environment and Energy designs and implements Australian Government policy and programs to protect and conserve the environment, water and heritage, promote climate action and provide adequate, reliable and affordable energy. The Department and its portfolio has some fascinating subject matter and includes:
- The Australian Antarctic Division
- Snowy Hydro 2.0
- The Bureau of Meteorology

- Special accounts, a wide range of administered revenues, cost recovery and grants
The Financial Services Branch (FSB) currently consists of a diverse team of around 84 staff, and is responsible for supporting a positive, forward thinking corporate culture. The new CFO Robert Hanlon is driven to continue building a modern, contemporary finance function supported by best practice financial systems and with a keen focus on adding value to business areas through business partnering.
This is an opportunity for a high performing EL2 to stretch their capabilities and position themselves for the Band 1 level, including opportunities to act in the CFO position when required. You will enjoy the opportunity to develop your leadership style and will be encouraged to take on opportunities to work closely and collaboratively with Senior Executives across the Department and the Portfolio. You will be encouraged to lead and innovate your function with autonomy, with a strong focus on maturing systems and improving ‘value add’ through performance reporting. As a “super EL2” you will coordinate service delivery across an EL2 team whilst promoting the development of up and coming EL’s by role modelling a collaborative and outcomes focused leadership style.
The Deputy CFO will work closely with the CFO to provide advice on the financial aspects of policy and strategic decisions made in relation to all departmental activities and the overall management of the Department’s budget. You will you will be responsible for ensuring the high quality delivery of a range of functions, including budgets and appropriations, procurement, accounts management, financial delegations and the Secretary’s Instructions, financial audits and audit facilitation, travel, credit cards, and compliance, monitoring and reporting. In this role, you will also support the CFO in the provision of high level advice to the Department’s Executive and key portfolio stakeholders. There will be a strong emphasis on business partnering and working with the ICT team to further develop financial systems (SAP and TM1) and mature reporting to support stronger decision making.
This role will suit a high performing EL2 with extensive financial management experience (CPA/CA) that has given you a strategic outlook across the whole of a finance function for a complex organisation. You are a skilled influencer and communicator highly regarded for your ability to lead people, manage change and resources, and deliver results. You think creatively to solve problems and will thrive when given the opportunity to partner closely with business areas to deliver change. You have a robust technical background that enables you to quickly understand a wide range of technical problems, from complex asset treatments for financial statements, to activity based costing of services, to building stronger reporting through BI tools.
A competitive EL2 salary package will be negotiated commensurate with qualifications and experience
