Assistant Director - Work Health and Safety

Our client is a diverse directorate delivering and contributing to upholding the law and the principles of fairness, equity and tolerance in the relationship between the government and our community.

The Opportunity

As the Assistant Director, WHS, you will have the opportunity to think big with a whole-of-business mindset as you develop and administer a health and safety framework for all business operations and provide technical expertise to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the organisation’s employees, visitors, clients and contractors.

You will utilise your strong stakeholder engagement skills to provide detailed interpretive advice to stakeholders and management on legislation, regulatory or policy matters relating to work health and safety matters.

This is an initial 6 month contract, however high performers will have a path to permanency.

The Role

Under the limited direction of the Director, People and Culture, you will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Develop, implement and review work health and safety systems, policies and procedures, in line with legislative and regulatory requirements and in consultation with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate
  • Provide strategic and technical advice to Executives and, where appropriate, make recommendations for remedial action
  • Assist managers and workers understand and comply with WHS obligations and work with senior management to clearly articulate and embed these accountabilities in all facets of the business
  • Undertake trend analysis and reporting to the Executive and other key stakeholders including the Executive Governance Committee and Workplace Consultative Committee about work health and safety issues. Provide secretariat support to these committees as necessary
  • Develop and coordinate an internal WHS training, inspection and audit schedule for staff, ensuring WHS training and qualifications for staff are up to date e.g. First Aid Officer and Fire Warden training and new starter induction program
  • Carry out incident and accident investigations to ensure implemented management systems are compliant with legislative and regulatory requirements. Produce documentation such as briefing notes, incident finding reports as required
  • Lead and coordinate WHS initiatives and ensure effective collaboration with the broader WHS community for the purpose of continuous improvement and best practice
  • Coordinate and oversee facility related works, repairs and maintenance
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the effective and efficient operation of the organisation, and maintain records in accordance with the Territory Records Act 2002

The Ideal Person

As the successful candidate you will have excellent knowledge of WHS legislations and best practices along with the ability to apply them across workplace activities.

You will be a self-starter with a strong focus on delivering clear and effective advice, strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to cultivate strong working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

You will have proven analytical skills and demonstrated ability to provide flexible solutions in a dynamic work environment to solve problems before they become an issue along with a demonstrated experience in developing and implementing WHS policies, procedures, guidelines, programs, action plans and audit systems to facilitate compliance.

Demonstrated experience in risk management, risk assessment, WHS investigation and development of practical mitigation strategies to address complex work safety issues will also see you succeed in this role.

Salary / Rate

  • $105 – $120K per year plus Super
  • 6 – 12 Month Non-Ongoing contract
  • View to permanency
