About National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO)

NACCHO is the national peak body representing 144 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). In addition, they are the lead advisor to the Commonwealth Government on primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples nationally.

ACCHSs range from large multi-functional services employing several medical practitioners and providing a wide range of services to small services which rely on Aboriginal health practitioners and/or nurses to provide the bulk of primary health care services. Their 144 members provide services from about 550 clinics.

NACCHO has seen massive growth in the last 12-18 months. This growth is due to a significant increase in their funding and the development of even closer relationships with government, membership organisations and stakeholders.

The Opportunity

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 15 times more likely to be diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease than other Australians.

This is an opportunity for you to:

  • Work on a newly established program aimed at supporting community-controlled health organisations to co-design and implement approaches to prevent and/or manage ARF and RHD
  • Transition from the Australian Public Service to the Not-For-Profit sector where you will have a higher on-ground impact and be closer to communities and health services delivering health programs
  • Gain significant career progression with the potential for a high performing APS6 to step up to Assistant Director
  • Continue to develop your staff leadership skills by managing a small team.

The Role

The Rheumatic Heart Disease team is a newly established team which coordinates the development of a new community-led service delivery model for the prevention and management of (ARF) and RHD. The new model will support the sector to develop and deliver key activities in response to the specific needs of their communities.

Working as part of this small and dynamic team, your duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Work closely with the community-controlled sector to reduce the burden of ARF and RHD and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by ARF and RHD and their families
  • Ensure that the program considers workforce and data issues to ensure that the sector is supported to continue providing high quality clinical care
  • Engage with key partners and stakeholders within the ACCHO sector, the Commonwealth, the states and territories, peak bodies, and Aboriginal people with a lived experience of ARF and RHD
  • Articulate a clear path forward to support early detection and effective treatment of RHD and ARF and ensure services are provided in a culturally safe way, targeting highest need communities
  • Manage and mentor a small team

Travelling interstate to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is involved in this role.

The Ideal Person

To be successful in this role, you will be flexible, organised and resilient. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience in the management of programs, grants or contracts within either the APS or a relevant NGO.

Strong cultural awareness is paramount to your success in this role and alignment with organisational values.

You will also have:

  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills and sound judgement
  • A demonstrated collaborative approach to achieving shared goals and the ability to lead a small team
  • Ability to harness information and opportunities to contribute to NACCHO’s strategic direction
  • Outstanding communication skills, verbal and written, including the ability to present complex and technical information in a simple and clear manner, and tailor written material to different audiences
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills across a range of settings, including identifying and maintaining influential relationships, and an ability to collaborate and influence at senior level.

Salary / Rate

  • $110k -$120k + 15% super
  • 12-month non-ongoing contract
  • Role is located in the Canberra office with interstate trips
