APS6 Senior Finance Officer

This cultural agency based in Canberra houses the world’s most important and extensive collection of cultural and research material and has a goal of promoting Australia’s culture. The agency is also a source of information and knowledge for Australians and people around the world.

The Opportunity

This role is a permanent vacancy as the incumbent has recently been promoted. It will initially be offered as a 6-12-month contract to start, with permanent recruitment to take place later. Alternatively, if you are a current APS employee, this opportunity is open as a s26 transfer. You will be working alongside an outcomes focused CFO and Assistant Director who will provide you with mentorship to assist with your career development in government. You will also have an opportunity to develop and grow your leadership skills as you will be overseeing the work of a small team.

The Role

Because of the size of the finance team, you will have variety to your work however the core responsibilities are around assisting the Assistant Director to prepare financial statements and to oversee the financial operations function. Your role will also include:

  • Preparation of monthly internal and external reporting requirements
  • Supervision of the day-to-day finance activities including accounts payable, receivable, travel, asset management, capital-spending program, budgeting
  • Ensuring financial and procurement activity is accurately recorded and is consistent with contracts, budgets, guidelines, and accounting standards
  • Assist with system implementation changes and business improvement activities
  • Produce structured and ad-hoc reports, memos, policies, procedures, and analysis on financial performance for internal and external stakeholders
  • Preparing taxation returns (including Business Activity Statements, FBT) and providing advice on tax issues
  • Providing timely and accurate assistance in the preparation of the financial statements and reports including content for the Annual Report, Audit Assurance Committee, Council and Portfolio Budget Statements

The Ideal Person

Ideally, you will be a degree qualified Accountant with around three years’ experience working in financial accounting within government or a large commercial organisation. While this is preferred, those with a background in audit and management accounting will also be considered. You will also have completed your CA/CPA or have strong progression towards. As this is a small finance team, you will be a real team player and enjoy helping your colleagues out when workloads are high.

Due to the nature of the role, you will need to be an Australian Citizen to be considered for this opportunity.

Salary / Rate

  • $75K – $85K + Super or salary match for existing APS employees
  • 6 – 12 month non-ongoing or s26 transfer
  • Fulltime opportunity
