APS5 & APS6 Policy Officer
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications is a large federal government department with a highly varied remit.
You will join the Digital Productivity Team that provides strategic and policy advice to the government on how to maximise the productivity benefits of the National Broadband Network (NBN), including supporting the work of the Australian Broadband Advisory Council, as well as managing issues relating to communications affordability and digital inclusion.

There are 2 x contract positions at the APS5/6 levels available on 12-month contracts with likely 6-month extensions.

The Role
- Use research and analysis to develop and refine policy options and reports for the consideration of government
- Provide secretariat support for a ministerial body, including making bookings and arrangements, preparing agendas and briefing material
- Assist with the preparation of general government briefing documents including media products, website content, briefings and meeting papers
- Liaise and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including NBN Co, retailers and regulators
- Provide input on a range of media products, including speeches, media releases, talking points and website content
Your Background and Experience
These is a varied position, so strong generalist skills in federal government will be essential as well as a background in policy or public communications.
You’ll also require the following:
- An enthusiastic, outgoing and resilient personality in order to fit into the culture of the team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, busy and dynamic environment
- An effective approach to liaising with stakeholders in the sector
- Ability to think strategically in terms of helping to shape the team’s work
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Ability to pick up corporate IT systems quickly (e.g. records management system)
Salary / Rate
- APS5: $45 – $55 per hour + 10% super
- APS6: $55 – $75 per hour + 10% super
- 2 x 12-month contracts available with likely 6-month extensions
- Commencement ASAP
