JAS-ANZ Staff Share What it’s Like to Work at the Forefront of Consumer Confidence

As consumers, we often don’t know much about the organisations that work tirelessly behind the scenes to help ensure the safety, quality and integrity of the products and services we buy.

One company that exists for this purpose is the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (or JAS-ANZ).

JAS-ANZ provides independent accreditation of professional industry bodies that have devised their own accreditation schemes within their sector. Operating across Australia and New Zealand and recognised on the global stage, JAS-ANZ helps ensure that the standards of excellence being set by industry bodies are designed and managed to the highest standard.

With a number of significant roles on offer, we chatted to Lee, Jade-Anna and Ben from JAS-ANZ who shared what their roles entail, why they applied to work at JAS-ANZ, and what they’ve found since joining the organisation.

“JAS-ANZ typically flies under the radar but the role we have in ensuring the safety, quality and integrity of the products and services we use cannot be overstated. It makes me proud to work in an organisation that makes such a positive impact on the lives of people from Australia and New Zealand.”

Ben, Marketing Coordinator

What is your role at JAS-ANZ?

Lee: I am the Health and Human Services Sector Manager in our Canberra office. My role is to lead accreditation services including engaging with scheme owners, professional bodies, regulators and industry stakeholders.

Jade-Anna: I work in our Wellington office as a Technical Specialist for the Food and Biological sectors. I work on the frontline with our clients, leveraging my industry expertise and knowledge to conduct complex audits including written, in office and observation assessments.

Ben: I am based in Canberra in the JAS-ANZ Operations Team as a Marketing Coordinator.  A large focus of my role is to support and grow the JAS-ANZ brand while also working on internal and external communications and projects.

What was your background prior to joining JAS-ANZ?

Lee: My background in the health industry has often been in a healthcare setting and prior to joining JAS-ANZ I was working with medical devices for 8 years. This role was largely customer service focused and also gave me exposure to a number of different accreditations and schemes such as the International Medical Device Regulator.

Jade-Anna: I have worked in the food regulatory industry for almost 30 years. I started working at the deli counter doing food safety and from there I spent many years at Foodstuffs as the Food Regulation Supervisor. In this role I was responsible for our food safety standards, compliance, assessments and training across the organisation.

I also spent time working for the NZ Government as an Environmental Health Officer, auditing across the vast food business space.

Ben: Before JAS-ANZ I spent over a decade in the hospitality industry, initially in event management before moving to marketing.

“My role has it all – it is people, skills and technical rolled into one. There is a lot of engagement with industry which means I deal with a wide variety of stakeholders in the health and human services sectors.”

Lee, Health and Human Services Sector Manager

And why did you make the move to JAS-ANZ?

Lee: I was attracted to how closely the role aligned with my prior experience while also providing opportunities to continue to learn and develop. At interview, we discussed the upcoming growth and reforms to Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme and how that would be a key area of focus for me. That was very appealing as it was a chance to be a part of delivering the best outcomes for the participants.

I also have a young family and the flexibility and culture of JAS-ANZ is very much in line with what I value in an organisation.

Jade-Anna: In my previous roles I was aware of JAS-ANZ however I did not realise the scope of the work they were involved in. I was really interested when the opportunity came up as I knew it would give me a different perspective within an industry I was very familiar with. It would mean seeing and working with a top-down view and that was very appealing.

Ben: JAS-ANZ plays a pivotal role in ensuring consumer trust and confidence in many products and services we use on a daily basis. It was attractive to me because while the organisation is relatively small, I could clearly see they had far-reaching influence and were making a large impact

What have you found since joining the organisation?

Lee: My role has it all – it is people, skills and technical rolled into one. There is a lot of engagement with industry which means I deal with a wide variety of stakeholders in the health and human services sectors.

Like so many, COVID-19 forced us to re-think our approach in a number of ways and that has had a really positive impact on the organisation. We are refocussing and redefining where we put our efforts to make the most impact and that makes it a really exciting time to join.

Jade-Anna: I love the complex environment we operate in. Here, you can never know everything so you’re learning every single day. We work alongside a very high calibre of people, really seasoned experts and professionals.

I have also found that my science background has served me really well. In order to provide accreditation, there are some very technical assessments required and being able to leverage my science background in combination with real-world experience has really set me up for success.

Ben: The culture here is really strong. The work is so varied and wide-reaching that there are a lot of opportunities to get involved with different aspects of the business. There is a lot of encouragement and support to take on additional training, we have an in-house Learning and Development team which is fantastic for a company of our size.

This leads to opportunities for internal growth and movement. I have seen people move into more senior roles after becoming immersed in an area that really interests them and being supported to develop their skills.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role with JAS-ANZ?

Lee: There are a lot of opportunities to use your initiative, I never feel pigeonholed in my role. There is space to explore different avenues and take responsibility for identifying  potential.

If you enjoy working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, then you will never get bored here!

Jade-Anna: This is a great place to come when you have industry or public sector experience and are looking for the next step in your career. It gives you the ultimate viewpoint across industry and regulation, and you’re making a difference every day to industry operators and the consumers who buy the goods and services.

Ben: We often take for granted that the products and services we consume on a day-to-day basis are available and safe. Working here has made me stop and think about that a lot.

JAS-ANZ typically flies under the radar but the role we have in ensuring the safety, quality and integrity of the products and services we use cannot be overstated. It makes me proud to work in an organisation who make such a positive impact on the lives of people from Australia and New Zealand.
