Happy New (Financial) Year: Reflecting on the Year That Was

The 2019-20 financial year has been full of ups and downs for all of us at H1. Both personally and professionally. But we recently gathered to reflect on and celebrate the year that was.

Over summer this year, like so many Canberrans, we were directly affected by the devastating fires in surrounding NSW. Further afield, our hearts broke to see so much destruction across Australia and we were moved to help in any way we could.

As a business, we donated to various disaster relief funds and committed to helping recovery on our beloved south coast by putting together a bushfire relief committee. The committee’s purpose is to funnel our volunteering and fundraising efforts towards ongoing and long term support for the rejuvenation of the forests, bushland and wildlife affected by the fires.

Our team moved to remote working in March and spent 3 months working from home before slowly returning to our office recently. The threat of the global pandemic is far from over though and we are constantly adapting our work and home lives to stay safe and healthy.

Like many others, we experienced upheaval when we scrambled to get every team member working from home workspace up and running. With very little disruption to our services, we successfully continued to drive and facilitate recruitment activity within both the government and commercial sectors. We had a renewed focus on supporting the Canberra community and our consultants really rallied around local businesses, enabling them to continue to attract and secure top talent through incredibly tough circumstances.

Our Scribing & Campaigns team really rose to the challenges served by remote working. With Graduate Recruitment season looming, there was a rush to develop processes and source the technology required to carry out assessment centres and interviews for 1000s of applicants virtually. They quickly became the experts of doing bulk recruitment remotely with all 8 government departments we partnered with on grad rounds, successfully carrying out their yearly recruitment.

Over the course of the last 12 months, our team continued to grow, and we welcomed Liz, Tom, Georgia, Nick, Kate, Cheryne and Anna to HorizonOne. Our existing team went from strength to strength with Andy, Alan, Kristelle, Liz, Tom and Tammy all being promoted due to their ongoing performance, success and development.

Simon took a well-deserved long service leave break, we were named as finalists in the Telstra Business Awards and we moved into our amazing new custom-designed office space.

On Friday 31 July, we held our End of Financial Year Dinner & Awards to reflect on and celebrate the year gone by as well as to recognise the standout performances of a number of our team members.

Our 2020 winners were:

Don’t Stop at Good Enough Award – Melissa Frazer

This award goes to the person who works above and beyond every single day. They provide exceptional service and embrace the H1 values and culture wholeheartedly.

Success Award: Top Biller – Sarah Tamasi

As a commercial business, we celebrate team members who contribute most to the bottom line. This award goes to the consultant with the strongest financial results.

Success Award: Business Growth – Lucas Walker & Liz Strachan

This award is presented to the people who have proactively worked to grow their business area in line with our values. This may be through introducing new or strengthening existing revenue streams and relationships to contribute to the overall business performance.

Changing Lives Award – Madeline Quinn & Tom Haskell

This award goes to the people who have demonstrated that they’ve challenged themselves and grown their skills, experience and themselves over the year.

H1 Culture Champion Award – Tammy Tong

This award is our People’s Choice (voted for by peers) and goes to the person who is well respected and deserves recognition for everything they do. This person adds value to the business and has a great and positive impact on the workplace culture.

Photo Booth

We all had a really great time on the evening, and it was a fantastic opportunity to let our hair down. Our beautiful office was decked out with style and fun by event organisers Kate, Tammy and Andy and we enjoyed delicious food from the one and only 86 in Braddon.
