Summer is well and truly upon us!

For those who have been in Canberra for many years, it’s time to pull out the tried and trodden map with all of our favourite places to go on a sunny day. And for those who have only been in our nation’s capital for a short time, exploring everything this wonderful city has to offer will be enough to keep you busy all summer.

To see if we could add a few unexplored locations to our maps, and offer newbie Canberrans some cool ideas, we asked 5 members of the HorizonOne team to share their favourite secret spot to visit in summer.

Here’s what they told us…

Favourite secret spot in Canberra?

My favourite place is probably just out of Canberra, getting up to the mountains to go fly-fishing and enjoying the surrounds. In Canberra, I really like getting down to Yerrabi Pond.

Why do you like it?

A run around the pond with my dog and my daughter on her bike clears the mind.

How often do you try to go?

A couple of times a week, weather permitting.

Do you recommend it to others?

Absolutely

Favourite secret spot in Canberra?

Not such a secret anymore, but there’s nothing better than grabbing a cold beer on a Friday arvo in one of the beer gardens at OCI (Old Canberra Inn).

Why do you like it?

There’s always a good atmosphere there; plenty of people enjoying themselves, regular music, tasty and different cold brews, great food and the staff are top notch.

How often do you try to go?

Once a week…more often if I can get away with it.

Do you recommend it to others?

Yep, it’s well worth a visit. Just don’t form a single line at the bar… it’s a pub – get up to the bar and get involved!

Favourite secret spot in Canberra?

My favourite place to go in Canberra in summer is the Duntroon Pool.

Why do you like it?

It’s not too busy, is always clean and the water is super cold. There are lovely big trees to lie under and have a snooze post picnic while the kids play and swim. There are also barbeques and lots of grass for the kids to play games on. And there is a toddler pool for the little ones.

How often do you try to go?

When it gets super “Canberra” hot, we go most days particularly in the school holidays (as I have four children I need to entertain/exhaust) and definitely on weekends.

Do you recommend it to others?

Only if you are a Defence Member or Defence Family! The pool is fully staffed and not open to the public however if you are one of the hundreds of new–to-Canberra-Defence families every year, make sure you check out the facilities on all the local Defence bases. They often have wonderful facilities that are open to families and are under-utilised. Just take your ID with you of course!

Favourite secret spot in Canberra?

Sonoma Bakery.

Why do you like it?

Amazing coffee and tea, friendly staff, close to work, and it has some of the best golden rays of morning sunshine. They also do a fantastic non-alcoholic cascara mojito.

How often do you try to go?

I like to go there before work for a quick read and to get myself in an optimal mindset to start the day.  Sometimes I like to get in a sneaky lunch time escape as well.

Do you recommend it to others?

I’ve managed to convert a number of people in the office as their morning go-to coffee fix.

Favourite secret spot in Canberra?

I’m pretty new to Canberra, having only moved here at the beginning of the year. So I haven’t actually spent a summer here yet!

I have enjoyed discovering Canberra so far though. I quite enjoyed Casuarina Sands Reserves and would recommend everyone to go during autumn – the leaves turn yellow and it’s absolutely spectacular to look at. I’d like to camp there for a day or 2 in summer and hopefully see some wombats!

I’ve also been out to the Coast and down to Narooma during winter and will definitely be going there during summer.
